Brandywine Claims 2016-17 Chancellors Cup

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine was officially proclaimed as the top athletic program in the Penn State University Athletic Conference during the 2016-17 academic year on Monday as Brandywine received the Chancellors Cup during the league's annual awards banquet.

Brandywine totaled 62 points, two points greater than runner up Penn State Mont Alto. Brandywine and Mont Alto were the only campuses to earn more than 45 points. Points are awarded to schools based on finish in the PSUAC standings in each of the conference's 11 sponsored sports.

During the 2016-17 academic year, Brandywine won four conference championships. The softball team became Brandywine's first squad to win three consecutive conference crowns, while the Lions' men's soccer team claimed the league title for the third time in four seasons. Women's basketball entered the PSUAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed, but won three games in five days by a combined 33 points to land its third PSUAC championship during Head Coach Larry Johnson's tenure. In its second year as a varsity program, Brandywine women's soccer rolled through its conference competition en route to its first championship.

In addition to its four championships, Brandywine men's cross country finished as the league's runner up, while the volleyball team and baseball squad both reached the PSUAC Tournament semifinals.

Brandywine has now won two Chancellors Cups, also earning the honor following the 2013-14 academic year. During the last six years, Brandywine is the only campus to finish in the top two in the Chancellors Cup standings each year.

Brandywine features 13 varsity sports with nine competiting the in PSUAC: men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. Its seven team sports combined to win 84 of 106 games (.792 winning percentage) against PSUAC competition. Brandywine's women's teams were especially successful in 2016-17, winning nearly 89 percent of conference games (56-of-63).
