Miscues Prove Costly For Brandywine In Losses To Cairn

ASTON, Pennsylvania -- Penn State Brandywine comitted six errors over two games and suffered a pair of losses to Cairn University on Tuesday afternoon. The Highlanders topped the Lions 11-2 in game one and claimed the nightcap 7-2.

Cairn opened game one with a single run in the first and padded its lead by taking advantage of two Brandywine errors during a five-run second inning. The Highlanders added four more scores in the fourth to run away from the Lions.

Pat Tackney (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) delivered a third-inning, RBI single and Steve Trainor (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) produced a run-scoring base hit in the fourth to account for Brandywine's runs.

Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) took the loss on the mound for Brandywine despite allowing just three earned runs. He worked six innings and struck out two.

Cairn built a 3-1 lead through three innings of game two and tacked on a single run in the fourth. The Highlanders added three more runs in the fifth behind back-to-back run-scoring hits from Alejandro Fernandez and Matthew Buckery.

Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) came around to score on a Cairn error in the third, while Trainor crossed home following a sacrifice fly from Dave DiMeglio (Morton, Pa./Ridley) to provide Brandywine's pair of runs.

Troy Mucchetti (Haverford, Pa./Haverford) allowed seven runs (six earned) over six innings and fanned four, while suffering the loss.

Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) went 4-for-7 at the plate on the day, while Trainor delivered two hits and reached base in five-of-six at-bats. Crumlish added two hits during game two and Tackney collected a pair of hits in the opener.
