Brandywine Edged At Swarthmore 7-5

SWARTHMORE, Pa. --  Swarthmore built a five-run lead and had to hold off a Penn State Brandywine rally to pick up a 7-5 non-conference baseball victory on Thursday afternoon.

Swarthmore took a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Brandywine quickly answered with two runs during the third. Doug Medrano (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) led off the frame with a single and came around to score on a groundout, while Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) sped home with the second run on a passed ball.

The Garnet took advantage of three Brandywine errors in the fifth and extended their lead to 7-2 with four more runs.

The Lions got two back during their next at-bat as Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) reached on an error, moved to second on Tommy Crumlish's (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) single and scored on a wild pitch. Crumlish would then cross home via a Garnet throwing error.

Brandywine loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but mustered just one run out of the rally. After Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) walked to load the bases, Crumlish worked a base on balls to force a run across, but Brandywine would get no closer.

Joe Samohod (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) worked the first five innings on the mound for Brandywine, allowing seven runs, just two of which were earned, and suffered the loss. Nate Forwood (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Samohod.

Brandywine (4-11) hosts Ursinus on Friday at 4:00 pm.
