Pitching Leads Brandywine To League-Opening Sweep

ASTON, Pennsylvania -- Three Penn State Brandywine pitchers combined to allow just one run over 14 innings as the Lions posted a sweep of Penn State DuBois in their PSUAC-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Brandywine won game one by a 2-0 count and claimed the nightcap 6-1.

Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) and Nate Forwood (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) combined on a four-hit shutout to lead Brandywine to victory in the opener.

Ulmer went the first five innings, allowing just four hits and striking out a pair to claim his first win of the season. Forwood retired six of the seven batters he faced and did not allow a hit over the final two innings for his first save.

Ulmer had to work out of bases-loaded trouble in the first and fifth frames. With one out and the bases jammed in the first, he rolled a double-play ball to end the threat and then retired the final two batters in the fifth on a ground out and fly out to escape a second jam.

Brandywine received all of the runs it would need in the first inning. John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) singled with one out and moved to third on Anthony Bianchini's (Long Island, N.Y./Long Beach) base hit. After Bianchini stole second, Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) delivered a single through the middle that scored both runners.

Dan Bowman limited Brandywine to just one additional hit following the first inning, but took the loss on the mound for DuBois.

Brian Bosco (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) evened his record at 2-2 this spring after tossing a complete game in the nightcap. He scattered four hits, while allowing just one run and striking out seven. Bosco retired the final seven batters he faced in order.

Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Dan McMenamin's (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) two-out single plated Bianchini; however, DuBois quickly knotted the score in the fifth with a two-out run of its own.

Brandywine used four hits and two hit batters to retake the lead and pull away from DuBois in the sixth. With two outs, Kevin Roche (Malvern, Pa./Chaminade College Prep) blooped a single down the right field line that scored Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) with the go-ahead run. After two consecutive batters were hit by pitches, forcing in another score, a DuBois error led to Brandywine's third run. Pat Tackney (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) capped the rally with a two-run single and Bosco shut down DuBois in its final at-bat, striking out the side.

Roche recorded two of Brandywine's six hits, while Bownman posted half of DuBois' four hits.

Brandywine (6-12, 2-0 PSUAC) hosts Penn State Mont Alto on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
