Masi Walks Brandywine Off With Sweep Of Schuylkill

ASTON, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine trailed 4-2 entering the final inning, but Matt Masi's (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) three-run double walked the Lions off with a PSUAC doubleheader sweep of Penn State Schuylkill as Brandywine claimed game two 5-4 after winning the opener 6-4.

Brandywine, which had been limited to just two hits over the first six innings, saw its first three runners reach base in the final inning. Doug Medrano (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) opened the frame with a single and pinch runner Pat Tackney (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) moved to second when Steve Trainor (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) was hit by a pitch. After Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) worked a four-pitch walk, Masi delivered a long, two-base hit into the right-center field gap, plating all three base runners and setting off a celebration at home plate.

Masi knocked in four runs overall during the game. He walked with the bases loaded in the first inning to tie the score at 1-1 before John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) drove in Brandywine's second run with a sacrifice fly.

After Schuylkill tied the game in the third, it claimed a 3-2 lead with a single run in the fourth and plated an insurance run in the seventh.

Osenbach had two of Brandywine's four hits and also walked twice in four at-bats. Troy Mucchetti (Haverford, Pa./Haverford) evened his record at 2-2 this spring after striking out three during a complete-game effort. Mucchetti allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits in seven frames.

Brandywine claimed game one behind a five-run first inning. After the first three batters singled to load the bases, Masi worked a walk to force in the first run. After a groundout produced Brandywine's second score, Dan McMenamin (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) delivered a bases-clearing triple to up the Lions' lead to 5-0.

Schuylkill climbed back to within one run after plating three runs on three hits in the third and adding one more in the fifth; however, Brandywine got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Osenbach's groundout scored Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin).

Brian Bosco (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) pitched all seven innings to pick up his team-leading third win of the season. He fanned four and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits.

Gaetano Visconti surrendered just four hits and recorded two of his own at the plate, but took the loss for Schuylkill.

Brandywine (9-14, 5-1 PSUAC) hosts Penn State York for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at 2:00 pm.
