Lions' Winning Streak Reaches Eight With Sunday Sweep

MONACA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine upped its winning streak to eight games following a pair of PSUAC baseball victories at Penn State Beaver on Sunday afternoon, claiming game one 12-1 and the night cap by an 8-6 count.

Brandywine, which holds a two-game lead for first place in the PSUAC standings, took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one following Dan McMenamin's (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) RBI single and then busted the game open with a six-run third inning.

After the Lions loaded the bases with one out, Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) delivered a two-run double. Following a Beaver error, McMenamin, Kevin Roche (Malvern, Pa./Chaminade College Prep) and Pat Tackney (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) recorded RBI singles in succession to up Brandywine's lead to 7-1.

The Lions would tack on two more in the fifth as Tackney doubled in McMenamin and then scored on Steve Trainor's (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) base hit before padding its lead with three more in the sixth.

Trainor went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, while Tackney, McMenamin and Dougherty all recorded two hits and two runs batted in.

Brian Bosco (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) earned his third-straight win and fourth overall this spring on the mound. He limited Beaver to one earned run on five hits and struck out one in six innings of work.

Trainor started a four-run first inning in game two with an RBI single and, after Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) walked with the bases loaded to force in another run, Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) singled in a pair of runs.

Beaver answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and would eventually take a 6-5 lead, but Brandywine responded with two runs in the fifth to pull back in front.

The Lions took advantage of two Beaver errors in the fifth as Dougherty reached on a miscue to load the bases and Masi was safe at first on an error that allowed Trainor to score the tying run. Crumlish hit into a double play with the bases loaded, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Trainor's sixth hit in seven at-bats on the day, an RBI double plating Tackney, padded Brandywine's lead in the sixth.

Trainor and Tom Osenbach (Newtown Square, Pa./West Chester Christian) combined for half of Brandywine's 10 hits in game two. Osenbach crossed home three times, while Trainor and Tackney both scored a pair of runs.

Troy Mucchetti (Haverford, Pa./Haverford) pitched all seven innings to up his record to 3-2. He struck out four and allowed six runs.

Brandywine (15-14, 11-1 PSUAC) faces Penn State Hazleton in a road doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
