Baseball Splits With Wilkes Barre On Senior Day

MEDIA, Pa. -- Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) fired a one-hit shutout in game two as Penn State Brandywine bounced back from a 3-1 loss in the opener to defeat Penn State Wilkes Barre 7-0 and force a split of the PSUAC baseball doubleheader on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.

Ulmer allowed a two-out single and a walk in the first, but bounced back to retire the next 12 batters he faced over the next four innings. During the first complete-game shutout of his career, Ulmer fanned three, while allowing just four Wilkes Barre hitters to reach base and upped his record to 2-3 this spring.

Steve Trainor (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) went 3-for-4 during game two and tallied half of Brandywine's 10 hits overall on the day.

Following four scoreless innings, Brandywine finally got on the board in the fifth. After loading the bases on two errors and a walk, Doug Medrano (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) worked a bases on balls to force in a run.

The Lions then pulled away, scoring six times in the sixth inning. Trainor and Dan McMenamin (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) both knocked in runs with base hits, while Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) and Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) forced in runs by walking with the bases loaded.

Wilkes Barre took a 1-0 lead after two innings of game one and extended its advantage to 3-0 following back-to-back RBI singles by Alan Gulbierz and Kerry Meyers in the fourth.

Brandywine's lone run came on Masi's second home run of the year, a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fourth.

John Fagotti limited Brandywine to four hits over seven innings to earn the win, while Joe Samohod (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) suffered the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits in seven innings.

Brandywine (16-18, 11-5 PSUAC) plays its home finale Sunday afternoon against Penn State Fayette at 2:00 pm.
