Brandywine Splits Doubleheader With Scranton

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Scranton posted a 3-1 victory in game one, but the Penn State Brandywine baseball team rebounded with a 19-2 triumph in game two as the teams split a Penn State University Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine took advantage of 10 walks issued by Scranton pitching and five errors and needed just 11 hits to score its 19 runs in game two.

The Lions trailed 2-0 in the second inning, but plated four runs as Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) walked with the bases loaded before a Scranton miscue allowed three runs to score.

John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) cleared the bases with a triple in the third, while Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Robert Spitaletta (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) each knocked in runs with singles.

Brandywine closed out the rout with eight more scores in the fourth. Spitaletta tallied an RBI double and run-scoring single, while base hits by Masi, Anthony Polanco (Long Island, N.Y./West Babylon) and Kevin Roche (Malvern, Pa./Chaminade College Prep (Calif.)) also pushed runs across.

Spitaletta, Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and Charlie Cooper (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) all scored three runs, while Gorgone added two hits and four RBI. Spitaletta and Masi both collected two-hit, two-RBI efforts.

Kevin Sessa (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) limited Scranton to two runs on three hits, while striking out four in five innings to earn his first collegiate win on the mound.

Brandywine was held to just four hits in the opener. The Lions' lone run scored when Masi walked, stole second, and scored on a Scranton error in the fourth. Scranton plated two runs during its half of the fourth and added a single insurance run two frames later.

Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) suffered the loss on the mound despite fanning eight Scranton batters in five innings on the mound.

Brandywine travels to Penn State York on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm game.
