DeStefano, Samohod Earn PSUAC Weekly Honors

MEDIA, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine junior Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) was named softball hitter of the week, while senior Joe Samohod (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) claimed baseball pitcher of the week awards from the Penn State University Athletic Conference on Tuesday.

DeStefano, who earned PSUAC Pitcher of the Week twice previously during her career, collected hits in all five games she played in the field last week and batted .556 overall during a 4-2 week for the Lions. She scored eight runs, while knocking in four. On Sunday, she added to her strong week by throwing a no-hitter at Penn State Wilkes Barre.

In 17 games, DeStefano ranks second on the team with a .476 batting average and has slugged five extra-base hits, including one home run. She also stands second with 16 runs scored, while driving in nine runs.

Samohod helped Brandywine baseball defeat Penn State York on Wednesday when he threw 7.0 innings of two-run ball. Just one of the runs he allowed was earned, while also recording a pair of strikeouts.

Samohod owns a 2-2 record this spring and has surrendered just one earned run during his last 14.0 innings on the mound. He has struck out 13 batters in 16.0 innings pitched during five appearances (three starts).

The Brandywine baseball and softball teams both host Penn State Schuylkill on Tuesday. Softball plays at doubleheader at 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm and baseball is slated for a 5:30 pm first pitch.
