Brandywine Splits On Senior Day

MEDIA, Pa. – Charlie Cooper (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) threw a four-hit shutout in game two, helping the Penn State Brandywine salvage a doubleheader split with Central Penn as the Lions celebrated Senior Day on Saturday afternoon. Brandywine took the nightcap 5-0 after dropping game one in extra innings 6-5.

Cooper struck out five as he went the distance for his first victory. He faced just four over the minimum after allowing four hits in 7.0 innings.

John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley), Robert Spitaletta (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) and Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) strung together consecutive hits to start the first inning, with Reynolds' base hit plating Gorgone with the Lions' first run. Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) forced in a run by working a bases-loaded walk and Reynolds scored on a groundout for the Lions' third run of the frame.

Brandywine padded its lead in the fourth when pinch-runner Max Palumbo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) crossed home on a groundout and Sheeran added an RBI single.

Seven different players recorded a hit in game two after Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin), Chris Skahill (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and T.J. Wiest (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) tallied two-hit efforts in game one.

Brandywine battled back from a 5-2 deficit with two runs in the fifth before tying the game one frame later. Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) plated Sheeran with a sacrifice fly and later in the fifth, Dougherty crossed home with the Lions' fourth run on a Central Penn error. After Gorgone led off the sixth with a triple, he scored to tie the game on Spitaletta's sacrifice fly, forcing extra innings.

Central Penn retook the lead for good in the eighth inning when Connor Dugan led off with a walk and scored from first following a Brandywine throwing error.

John Grader (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) allowed the unearned run in the eighth and took the loss in relief. Nate Forwood (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) and Gautam Goswamy (Coatesville, Pa./Collegium Charter) both threw scoreless innings in relief of start Frank Newman (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), who struck out two and surrendered five runs in 5.0 innings.

Brandywine (12-16, 9-2 PSUAC) is back at Maple Zone Monday night for a doubleheader against Penn State York beginning at 6:00 pm.
