Abington Outslugs Brandywine 13-8

ASTON, Pa. -- A combined nine runs scored by the hosts during the sixth and seventh innings made the difference as Penn State Abington recorded a 13-8 non-conference baseball victory over Penn State Brandywine on Thursday afternoon.

The game was scoreless after two innings, but Brandywine took advantage of an Abington error, scoring three unearned runs to begin the third. Matt Masi (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) recorded one of Brandywine's two hits during the inning, driving in Tommy Crumlish (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) with a single.

Abington tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth, but two more Abington miscues allowed Brandywine to move back in front by scoring two runs in the fifth.

After Masi's sacrifice fly made the score 6-4 in favor of Brandywine, Abington errupted for five runs during the bottom of the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to build a 13-7 lead.

Crumlish singled in a run in the seventh and Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) got the Lions one run closer in the eighth with a solo home run, but the Buoni blast would be the final scoring for either team on the day.

Buoni went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs, while Masi, Crumlish and Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) also recorded two hits. Masi and Kevin Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) both drove in a pair of runs and T.J.Wiest (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) crossed home twice.

Brandywine (14-16, 11-2 PSUAC) visits Penn State Schuylkill on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 pm in its final regular-season games. The Lions need to win one game to clinch the PSUAC Eastern Division regular-season title and a spot in Scranton for the PSUAC Tournament (May 7-8).
