Baseball Falls In PSUAC Tournament

SCRANTON, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine's 2017 baseball season came to a conclusion on Monday afternoon following a 2-0 setback to Penn State Mont Alto in the semifinal round of the Penn State University Athletic Conference Tournament.

Brandywine closed its first season under Head Coach Vinny Gallo with 16 victories, including 14 triumphs during the final 20 contests of the year. The Lions earned the No. 1 from the PSUAC Eastern Division after finishing the regular season with a 12-3 league mark.

The Lions put two runners on base in the first, second and seventh innings, but could not push a run across the plate against Mont Alto pitcher Lowell Singer. Singer earned his fourth win of the season by limiting Brandywine to six singles and striking out four in 7.0 innings of work.

Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) took the loss for Brandywine despite yielding just two earned runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out three. Nate Forwood (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant), making his final appearance in a Brandywine uniform, tossed a scoreless seventh frame. Forwood did not allow an earned run while facing an PSUAC opponent during his final two seasons in blue and white and topped the league with five saves in that time.

John Gorgone (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) also saw his collegiate career come to a close as he recorded a pair of hits to lead the Lions at the plate. Gorgone's four-year career concluded with 129 hits, 104 runs scored and 93 RBI. Classmate Joe Samohod (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) finished as the team leader in wins with four during his final season.

Mont Alto grabbed the lead on Colby Black's RBI groundout in the third and tacked on a second run when Jeremiah Younker singled in Tyler Martin three frames later.
