Highlanders Edge Brandywine 4-2

LANGHORNE, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine built a 2-0 lead, but Cairn University scored the game's final four runs to claim a 4-2, non-conference baseball victory over the Lions on Wednesday afternoon.

Matt Masi's (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) first-inning RBI single that plated Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) served as the game's lone run until the Lions tacked on a second score four innings later.

During the fifth inning, Sheeran walked, moved to second on Masi's base hit, and two batters later, crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum); however, the Highlanders struck for three runs on four hits during the bottom of the frame to secure a 3-2 lead.

Brett Marks' RBI single one inning later extended the Cairn edge to 4-2. Brandywine threatened to score with two runners on base and two outs in the eighth inning, but could not push any further runs across.

Masi recorded three of Brandywine's nine hits to extend his hitting streak to six games, while Chris Skahill (Media, Pa./Penncrest) added a pair of knocks.

Bradley Ulmer (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) took the loss after yielding three earned runs on five hits during the first five innings. Chris Edwards (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) held Cairn to one earned run on three hits over the next three frames.

Brandywine (6-11, 2-0 PSUAC) looks to complete a three-game sweep of Penn State Schuylkill on the road Friday at 2:00 pm. The Lions bested Schuylkill by scores of 12-3 and 8-7 during a home doubleheader on Monday.
