Eight Brandywine Student-Athletes Honored On USCAA Spring Academic Teams

MEDIA, Pa. -- A total of eight student-athlete representing four Penn State Brandywine spring teams were recently named to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Academic Team.

From the Brandywine softball team, Julie Foeldes (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) earned her third USCAA National Academic Team award, while Maddie Malfara (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) claimed her second accolade and Alexa Anderson (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) was honored for the first time.

Tennis student-athletes Katie Corey (Lansdowne, Pa./Agora Cyber Charter), Stephanie Bryan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Ridley), T.J. Foldes (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Arjun Puri (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Twp.) all earned laurels. For Corey, it marked the second-straight year that she was named to the USCAA National Academic Team.

Representing the baseball team was sophomore Brett Sheeran (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), who earned the award for the first time.

The USCAA National Academic Team award honors student-athletes during each season who have compiled a grade-point average of at least 3.50 and reached sophomore athletic and academic standing. Brandywine also placed eight fall student-athletes and one winter student-athlete on USCAA National Academic Teams during the 2017-18 academic year.

Brandywine's softball trio led the team to its fourth-straight Penn State University Athletic Conference championship this spring. Foeldes graduated Summa Cum Laude from Penn State with a degree in psychology and was also named USCAA Student-Athlete of the Year and received the John S. Egli Scholar-Athlete award from the conference recently. Malfara, a junior biology major, earned recognition on the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team this spring, while Anderson, a first team all-American and all-conference selection, set Brandywine single-season records with nine home runs, 55 hits and 59 RBI. She will continue her education at University Park in the fall, majoring in communication sciences and disorders.

Both juniors, Corey, a psychology major, and Bryan, an information sciences and technology major, played a majority of the season as Brandywine's No. 1 doubles partners. The duo also served as Brandywine's top singles players, winning a pair of singles bouts throughout the year.

Foldes graduated in May, receiving his degree in information sciences and technology, while Puri, who won a PSUAC championship with the Brandywine men's soccer team in 2016, is a sophomore computer science major. Foldes and Puri helped Brandywine to its most successful season since 2011 after the Lions posted six victories in nine matches.

Sheeran was a First Team All-PSUAC selection after batting .282 with 10 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 34 games this spring. He will continue to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering at University Park in the fall.
