Lions Drop Two Against SUNY Oneonta

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – SUNY Oneonta pitching held the Penn State Brandywine offense in check during a doubleheader sweep at the RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday as the Lions fell by scores of 7-1 and 4-1.

Game One: SUNY Oneonta 7, Penn State Brandywine 1

The game was a pitcher's duel for five innings before SUNY Oneonta padded its lead with a five-run sixth inning.

Oneonta held a 2-0 lead entering the fifth, but Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's Prep) delivered his first-career home run, a solo shot to left field, to account for the lone Brandywine run. Brandywine's offense was limited to four hits overall.

Tyler Michaels (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) took the loss on the mound after allowing six earned runs on four hits in 5.1 innings. Michaels, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before it was broken up by a one-out double, struck out one.

Game Two: SUNY Oneonta 4, Penn State Brandywine 1

Nick Petrella (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) set a career high with seven strikeouts over 6.1 innings and limited Oneonta to one earned run (four total) on seven hits, but was the hard-luck loser in game two. Ricky Palmer (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh by inducing a pop up and strikeout.

Marred by a pair of errors, Petrella yielded two runs in the third inning and aided by two more miscues in the sixth, Oneonta added its final two scores.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Lions in the sixth inning. With two outs, Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) scampered home on a wild pitch to get Brandywine on the board, but Nick Fini avoided further damage by getting a pop-up to end the frame.

Reynolds, Tom Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Sean Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) accounted for Brandywine's three hits in game two. Sean Donahue also swiped a base.

Brandywine (5-4) faces Fontbonne Wednesday at 4:15 in its final game in Florida.
