Big First Inning Leads Fontbonne Past Brandywine

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Fontbonne University scored eight times during the first inning to claim a 12-2 victory over the Penn State Brandywine baseball team during the Lions' final game at the RussMatt Invitational on Wednesday.

Fontbonne sent 13 men to the plate during the opening frame, taking advantage of four walks, two batters who were hit by pitches and an error.

Brandywine pushed its two runs across the plate in the sixth inning, cutting the margin to 9-2. Sean Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Nick Kutufaris (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) recorded back-to-back base hits to lead off the inning and both scored on a single to right-center field from Joe Hurley (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan).

Hurley also pitched well during his first appearance on the mound this season, striking out six batters during 5.1 innings of relief.

Kutufaris went 2-for-3 at the plate and stole a base, while Hurley, Donahue and Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) also tallied a hit for the Lions.

Brandywine (5-5) visits Maryland for a game at McDaniel on Wednesday, March 13 at 3:30 pm.
