Brandywine Splits Senior Day Doubleheader

ASTON, Pa. -- Three Penn State Brandywine pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout in game one as the Lions claimed a 1-0 victory, but Clarks Summit earned a split by winning game two in extra innings, 5-3, on Senior Night Tuesday at Maple Zone.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 1, Clarks Summit 0

Derek Cappadoccia (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains), Chris Edwards (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and Nick Bromley (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) yielded just an infield single to the Defenders to produce Brandywine's fourth shutout of the year.

Cappadoccia went the first three innings to land his second win after striking out five. Edwards allowed only two baserunners during his three frames, while Bromley avoided trouble in the seventh by getting a double-play groundout to end the game, earning his first save.

The Lions received all of the offense they would need in the second inning when Joey Buoni (Chester Heights, Pa./Salesianum) singled, stole second and came around to score on Jack Hedger's (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) base hit.

Game Two: Clarks Summit 5, Penn State Brandywine 3 (9 innings)

Game two was scoreless until the sixth inning when both teams struck for a pair of runs. Facing a 2-0 deficit, Hayden Altimari (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's Prep) brought the Lions even with a two-run single that plated Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Dalton Palmer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock).

The Defenders struck for three runs on four hits during the top of the ninth to retake the lead. A run-scoring double from Ben Mutz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) brought Brandywine within two runs with two outs during the bottom of the frame, but the Lions would not get closer.

Altimari and Wright both recorded two hits for the Lions, who collected 10 knocks overall.

Ricky Palmer (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) struck out two during four scoreless innings on the mound, while Nick Petrella (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) allowed two runs and fanned three in two frames. Mutz struck out four batters during his two innings on the hill.

Brandywine (16-15, 7-5 PSUAC) visits Penn State Scranton for its final road game of the regular season on Thursday beginning at noon.
