Lions Drop Final Games Of Weekend Series

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine dropped the final two games of its four-game, season-opening series to SUNY Cobleskill at Maple Zone on Sunday afternoon. Cobleskill won the opener 5-2 and claimed a 10-4 victory during game two.

Game One: SUNY Cobleskill 5, Penn State Brandywine 2

A three-run sixth inning was the difference in the game as Cobleskill took the lead for good in the opener.

Brandywine plated single runs during the first two innings to grab a 2-1 edge, but the Fighting Tigers knotted the score at 2-2 with a run in the top of the third.

Nick Wright (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) recorded his first of three hits in game one, a run-scoring single that plated Tom Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) during the first frame, while Nick Kutufaris (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) crossed home on a fielder's choice one inning later.

Wright and Brian Reynolds (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) combined for five of Brandywine's seven hits as Reynolds collected a pair of singles. Wright also stole two bases.

Jayson Maxwell recorded the go-ahead hit with an RBI double in the sixth off Brandywine relieve Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and the Fighting Tigers later tacked on two more insurance runs.

Baughman took the loss after yielding three runs and striking out two in 2.0 innings on the mound. Joe Hurley (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) worked 5.0 innings, fanning three, while allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits.

Game Two: SUNY Cobleskill 10, Penn State Brandywine 4

Faced with  a 2-0 deficit during the bottom of the first inning, Wright laced a run-scoring single and Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) followed with a RBI double, tying the score through one frame; however, Cobleskill plated four runs during the next three innings to build a 6-2 lead.

The Lions got two runs closer in the fifth when Hurley singled in Dalton Palmer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) and Donahue scored on a fielder's choice, but Cobleskill answered with four runs during its next at-bat to put the game away.

Wright added two more hits and two RBI during game two, while Hurley and Oechsle were both 1-for-3 with a run batted in at the plate.

Andrew Hoff (Thornton, Pa./Rustin) was tagged with the loss on the mound after pitching the first two-plus innings. Derek Cappadoccia (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains) and Nick Bromley (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) both recorded scoreless appearances out of the bullpen.

Brandywine (1-3) is back in action Saturday with a doubleheader against the University of Valley Forge at Villanova Ballpark in Plymouth Meeting. Game one begins at noon.
