Brandywine Drops Friday Twin Bill

ASTON, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Southern Maine Community College late Friday night. The Lions were defeated 9-4 in the opener and 9-3 in game two.

Game One: Southern Maine 9, Penn State Brandywine 4

Five consecutive bases-loaded walks in the top of the seventh inning were the difference in the opener. The Seawolves sent 10 batters to the plate despite recording only two hits during the frame, scoring five times to break a 4-all tie.

The Brandywine offense was limited to three hits, two off the bat of Cam Baughman (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and a base hit from Tyler Brooks (Oxford, Pa./Oxford).

Baughman singled, while Evan Abegg (Commerce City, Colo./Prairie View) walked and both scored on a Seawolves' error in the second to put Brandywine on top 2-1.

Southern Maine scored three times on Joseph Townsend's bases-clearing double in the fourth, but the Lions took advantage of two miscues by the Seawolves to knot the count at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame. Brooks singled, stole second and scored via error, while Mike DeGirolamo (Fredrick, Md./Fredrick) also scored on an error.

Matt Brucato (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) fanned three Seawolves in 2.1 innings of relief, but took the loss after allowing two earned runs on four hits. Dan Nearey (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) got the start on the mound, recording two strikeouts, while surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits in four innings.

Game Two: Southern Maine 9, Penn State Brandywine 3

Once again, Southern Maine took the lead during its final at-bat, this time scoring seven times during the bottom of the sixth inning.

The first six batters reached base safely and 12 batters came to the plate overall in the sixth for the Seawolves, who trailed 3-2 entering the frame.

Baughman struck out a career-high 10 batters through the first 4.1 innings for Brandywine. He received a no decision after allowing two earned runs on two hits.

Three Southern Maine pitchers combined to no-hit Brandywine.

Despite being held without a knock, Brandywine led 2-1 through five innings. Kyle Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa./Palisades) worked a bases-loaded walk, while DeGirolamo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in two runs during the fifth.

Southern Maine tied the score during the bottom of the inning, but Brandywine took the lead again in the sixth. After stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch, pinch runner Dalton Palmer (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) scored via passed ball.

Brandywine (5-7) continues its five-game homestand Wednesday against New Jersey City at 6:00 PM.
