Brandywine Drops Non-League Test At Widener

CHESTER, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine allowed Widener to shoot 54 percent from the field as the Pride claimed an 84-58 non-conference men's basketball victory over the Lions on Monday night.

After an evenly played first four minutes, Widener used a 9-0 run to open up a 14-5 lead. The edge for the Pride would reach 13 points on three occasions, but each time Brandywine answered with a three-pointer.

James Fisher (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Darby) buried two of those triples, including one with 1:26 to play before the half, and Marcus Turner (Claymont, Del./Chichester) followed with a layup, but the Pride brought a nine-point edge into the halftime break.

Nick Jackson and Kendall Green combined to score the first 10 points of the second half for the Pride as Widener's lead opened up to 15 five minutes into the stanza.

Naifes Smalls (Philadelphia, Pa./PE&T Charter) answered with a bucket and both Fisher and Isaiah Lester (Morton, Pa./Ridley) canned threes during an 8-2 Lions' spurt that made the deficit just nine; however, Widener responded by netting nine of the game's next 11 points over a three-minute span and would lead by double figures the rest of the way.

Fisher drained a trio of three-pointers to lead Brandywine with 14 points. He also added three assists and two steals, while Isaiah Wilmore (Philadelphia, Pa./Ben Franklin) tallied 13 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals. Smalls collected eight points, five assists and four boards.

Brandywine, which was hurt by 23 turnovers, shot 31 percent from the field and pulled down 14 offensive boards. Widener also committed 23 turnovers, but held a 43-37 edge on the glass and received a game-high 18 points from Green.

Brandywine (1-3) begins its conference schedule at home on Wednesday night against Penn State Schuylkill (7:00 pm).
