Brandywine Tops Beaver In Overtime, 99-96

MONACA, Pa. -- Shafi Mohammad (Philadelphia, Pa./Hawbridge School (N.C.)) scored nine of his career-high 27 points in overtime, helping the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team top Penn State Beaver 99-96 on Friday night.

In 25 minutes off the bench, Mohammad connected on 10-of-15 field goal attempts and 7-of-8 tries from the free throw line, totaling the highest scoring output by a Lion since Amir Davis poured in 28 points at Penn State Hazleton on Feb. 7, 2015. He also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double and collected three steals.

Six of James Fisher's (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Darby) seven made field goals were three-pointers as he added 23 points, along with five rebounds and five assists, while Isaiah Wilmore (Philadelphia, Pa./Ben Franklin) tallied 17 points, including the go-ahead free throw in overtime, and eight boards.

Mohammad converted a three-point play to open the extra session and added a layup on the Lions' next possession to give Brandywine a 92-87 edge. After a Beaver basket, Mohammad added his third bucket of overtime, helping push the lead back to five points.

Beaver answered with the game's next seven points, taking the lead with a pair of free throws from Erik Gallupe at the 1:01 mark, but Marcus Turner (Claymont, Del./Chichester) responded with a layup to retie the score 20 seconds later.

After Brandywine held Beaver scoreless on its ensuing possession, Wilmore was fouled and sank 1-of-2 free throws, giving Brandywine a 97-96 edge with eight seconds remaining. Following a Brandywine timeout, Fisher swiped a steal with three seconds on the clock and Mohammad drained a pair of free throws to secure the victory, Brandywine's second-straight.

The Lions led by 10 points at halftime as Fisher and Wilmore combined for 26 points during the opening 20 minutes. Beaver steadily chipped away at its deficit, eventually tying the game with a 6-0 spurt capped by Markel Sayles layup at the 15:12 mark.

Mohammad helped the Lions answer by scoring nine of the team's next 11 points as Brandywine rebuilt a six-point advantage; however, Beaver used a 15-5 surge spanning over six minutes and established a four-point edge with just over two minutes left.

Fisher and Edward Sanchez (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) canned back-to-back triples, aiding in a Lions' surge that allowed them to knot the score at 82-82 with under 90 ticks to play. Sanchez momentarily handed Brandywine a two-point lead by sinking a layup, but Gallupe sent the game to overtime with a basket just before the buzzer.

Brandywine buried 12 three-pointers and shot 44 percent from the field, while also forcing 24 Beaver turnovers. Aided by Mohammad and 10 points from Sanchez, Branywine received 42 points from its reserves.

The Lions (4-12, 3-5 PSUAC) look for a third-straight win on Saturday afternoon at Penn State Greater Allegheny (3:00 pm).
