Brandywine Downed By Penn In The Palestra

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Facing off with a NCAA Division I opponent for the first time in program history, the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team was outmatched by the University of Pennsylvania inside the Palestra on Saturday afternoon, falling 99-40.

Brandywine, which dropped to 0-2 early in the season, had eight players get into the scoring column as every healthy member of the roster saw time on the Palestra floor. Donte Winfield (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) led the offensive effort with nine points, while matching Terrence Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) for the team lead with six rebounds. Brown also chipped in seven points.

James Fisher (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Darby) added eight points, including a pair of threes, while Rob Tindley (Lawnside, N.J./Haddon Heights), who also connected on two triples, collected six points.

Undersized against its Division I counterparts, Brandywine held its own on the boards, hauling in 39 rebounds, including 14 on the offensive end. Penn managed just seven offensive rebounds despite featuring a roster of six players of 6-foot-8 stature or taller.

The Quakers, who buried 15 three-pointers, never let the Lions back into the game following a 14-3 run to open the contest. Penn opened up a 56-17 lead at the half and, despite an 11-2 Brandywine surge midway through the second stanza, would not allow the lead to dip below 40 over the final 19 minutes.

Penn sank 53 percent of its shots from the field, including nearly 39 percent marksmanship from beyond the arc, while Brandywine was limited to 23 percent shooting.

Brandywine continues its four-game road swing Tuesday at Penn State Abington beginning at 8:00 pm.
