York Downs Brandywine 78-73

YORK, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team saw its six-game winning streak conclude on Tuesday night following a 78-73 defeat at the hands of Penn State York.

Brandywine trailed 15-8 early in the first half before using an 18-6 run spanning nearly five minutes to gain the lead. Donte Winfield's (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) bucket stretched Brandywine's edge to six points with 4:13 to play in the first half and the Lions would settled for a 36-32 margin at intermission.

The Lions' lead grew to eight points on a Winfield jumper at the 15:34 mark, but York rallied over the next three minutes, outscoring Brandywine 13-1 to snag a one-point advantage.

The teams battled back and forth, trading the lead five times over the next eight minutes before Justin Luton sank two free throws and Khalil White followed by knocking down a triple for five quick York points as the hosts pulled in front 65-60 with 3:48 to go.

Seventy-six seconds later, Winfield canned a triple to make the deficit two points; however, Richard Grant countered with a jumper and added two free throws with 71 seconds remaining to up York's lead to seven points. The hosts knocked down six free throws during the final minute to secure the win.

Winfield led all scorers by pouring in a career-high 33 points. He canned 13-of-21 shots from the field, including five of Brandywine's nine triples, while also registering six assists and four rebounds.

Terrence Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) added 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Ameer Staggs (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) and Isiah Cook (Reading, Pa./Reading) both tallied nine points. Staggs and Dwayne Coleman (Philadelphia, Pa./Delaware Valley Charter) each pulled down seven rebounds.

Brandywine (17-7, 12-3 PSUAC) will need to win its regular-season finale Friday night against Penn State Lehigh Valley (8:00 pm) to earn a top-two seed and bye through the quarterfinal round of the PSUAC Tournament. The team will honor its four seniors prior to the game.
