Schuylkill Outlasts Brandywine In Overtime

MEDIA, Pa. -- Tariq Meredith sank the go-ahead free throws with 10 seconds left in overtime to lift Penn State Schuylkill over the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team by a score of 95-93 on Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine had a pair of opportunities to win the game during its final possession of regulation, but misfired on both shots before the horn sounded, extending the game an extra five minutes.

Schuylkill netted five of the first seven points of overtime, but Pat Gallagher's (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) layup and free throw knotted the count at 91-91 with 2:50 left.

The score remained deadlocked until two free throws from Quentin Beasley (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) put the Lions on top at the 1:14 mark. Schuylkill tied the game during its next possession with a layup and took the lead for good 40 seconds later.

Brandywine had the ball with six seconds to play, but out of a timeout, Bryce Barrouk's (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin) potential game-tying jumper was blocked.

Barrouk paced a balanced Brandywine offense that saw all five starters reach double figures in scoring with 25 points. He also pulled in 14 rebounds, a game-high, and blocked two shots. Beasley tallied 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Gallagher produced 16 points, seven boards, six assists and six steals.

Ketquan Gatewood (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Collegiate Prep) amassed 16 points and seven rebounds, while Andrew Persaud (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) was the fifth Lion in double figures with 11 points. Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) added eight points and five boards.

Brandywine used a 12-2 run, capped by a pair of Gatewood baskets, to take a 46-39 lead into halftime.

Gallagher tallied steals on consecutive possessions to open the second half, resulting in a layup and two Persaud free throws, as Brandywine upped the margin to 13 points.

Schuylkill quickly chipped away, pulling within one at the 13-minute mark. The visitors trimmed Brandywine's edge to one point five more times before finally taking the lead as Justin Alvarez buried a three-pointer with 5:08 to play.

Schuylkill led by as many as four points during the final minutes, but a layup by Beasley and two free throws from Barrouk tied the score and neither team mustered a point during the final minute to send the contest to overtime.

Brandywine shot over 50 percent (39-77) from the field, but managed just 7-of-26 shooting from beyond the arc and was 8-for-15 at the free throw line. Schuylkill shot 45 percent from the floor and received 40 points from its reserves.

Brandywine plays its final non-league game of the season Tuesday at Valley Forge beginning at 7:00 pm.
