Brandywine Edges New Kensington; Advances To PSUAC Championship

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine will play for its third Penn State University Athletic Conference men's soccer championship in the last four years after securing a spot in the title match with a 2-0 victory over Penn State New Kensington on Monday afternoon.

Brandywine, the top seed in the conference tournament, will face No. 3 Penn State Hazleton on Wednesday afternoon in State College at 4:00 pm. The Lions, who have won all 10 games against PSUAC opponents this fall, bested Hazleton 5-2 on October 18.

Brad Jule (Chadds Ford, Pa./Salesianum) got the scoring started for Brandywine in the 24th minute when he ripped a low shot that hit the post and bounded into the net.

James Cellucci (Rosemont, Pa./Radnor) added the Lions' second score as he headed in Brad Martino's (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) corner kick with six minutes to play before halftime.

Brandywine controlled possession for much of the second half, outshooting New Kensington 11-3, but neither team was able to push a goal across.

Brandywine outshot New Kensington 25-5 and attempted six of the game's 11 corner kicks. The Lions also had a pair of shots ring off the post.

Joe Opdenaker (Lenni, Pa./The Christian Academy) stopped both shots he faced to earn his fourth shutout and 14th victory of the season.
