Brandywine Edges Pitt-Greensburg 2-1 For First Win

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine scored twice during the first half and had to hold off Pitt-Greensburg late as the Lions picked up their first men's soccer victory of the year by a 2-1 score on Saturday afternoon.

It took Brandywine only 4:16 to get on the board as Jack Sweeney (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) sent a shot from the top of the box into the back corner of the net after receiving a feed from Brandon Crochunis (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East).

Just over 11 minutes later, Crochunis doubled the Lions' lead with his first goal of the young season. Rajbir Lohat (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) recorded his second assist of the year on the goal.

Brandywine received a standout performance in goal from freshman Brandon Welden (Essington, Pa./Interboro), who was making his first collegiate start. Welden recorded four saves during each half, while his lone blemish was Jared Jenkins' goal during the 61st minute.

Pitt-Greensburg applied pressure late in the game as it attempted to tie the score. The Bobcats had five shot attempts during the final 10 minutes, including one that rang off the cross bar, but Brandywine held on, evening its record at 1-1.

Crochunis recorded two of Brandywine's four shots on goal during the match. Pitt-Greensburg held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal and attempted five of the game's seven corner kicks.

Brandywine plays at home for the first time this season on Tuesday when the Lions entertain Gwynedd Mercy at 4:00 pm.
