Brandywine Tops Gwynedd Mercy 2-1 In Home Debut

MEDIA, Pa. -- Playing at home for the first time this season, the Penn State Brandywine men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over Gwynedd Mercy in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lions received goals from Marcos Rojas (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) and Chris Riebman (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore), while netminder Brandon Welden (Essington, Pa./Interboro) made seven saves, all during the second half, to earn his second victory.

Brandywine has now played three consecutive 2-1 games to begin the season, winning two-straight, as its record now sits at 2-1.

Rojas' header found its way into the back of the net after a long throw in from Stevie DiSipio (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), giving Brandywine a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

The match remained 1-0 until Riebman scored his second goal of the year during the 49th minute. He pulled away from the defense after Rajbir Lohat (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) sent him down the field with a long lead pass and took a shot that hit the post and bounded in.

With under 10 minutes to play, the Griffins cut their deficit in half when Matt Saba headed in a corner kick. Gwynedd Mercy continued to apply pressure, recording four more shots on goal, but Welden stopped all four to help Brandywine preserve the victory.

The game was played nearly even with GMU holding a slight 13-12 advantage in shots, while both teams' netminders made seven saves.

Brandywine (2-1) is idle until Wednesday, Sept. 13 when the Lions host Delaware Valley at 4:00 pm.
