Brandywine Plays Manor To Draw In Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- Freshman Joey Cairy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) scored with 3:32 remaining regulation, sending the match to overtime, and neither Penn State Brandywine nor Manor College could find the back of the net during 20 minutes of extra time as the Lions' season opener concluded in a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon on its home field.

Cairy's goal came from a bad angle as he lofted the ball over Blue Jay goalkeeper Aaron Chester from near the goal line on the right side of the cage, sending into the far left corner for the tying score during his collegiate debut.

Brandywine overcame a pair of one-goal deficits during the match to claim a draw. Less than 10 minutes into the match, the Blue Jays struck first, but Mohamed Camara (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) evened the score with under five minutes remaining before intermission. He beat a defender and angled a shot into the lower left corner of the net.

Amadou Kamagate was awarded a penalty kick during the 80th minute and beat Brandywine netminder Brandon Welden (Essington, Pa./Interboro) to help the Blue Jays retake the lead. It was the second penalty kick of the match as Chester turned aside a Brandywine attempt early in the opening half to keep the game scoreless.

Welden set a new career high with 13 saves, including one in overtime, while playing all 110 minutes. Chester also had to make one stop in overtime and turned away nine shots overall.

Brandywine plays on the road for the first time in 2018 Tuesday night when it visits Gwynedd Mercy for a 6:00 pm match.
