Brandywine Rolls 9-0 In PSUAC Opener

YORK, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine continued its winning ways in the Penn State University Athletic Conference as the two-time defending league champion Lions opened their title defense with a resounding 9-0 men's soccer victory over Penn State York on Wednesday.

Brandywine (3-2-2, 1-0 PSUAC) has now won 27 consecutive PSUAC regular-season matches since their last conference loss, a setback that came exactly three years ago Wednesday.

The Lions scored all nine of their goals during the first 63 minutes of the match with goals coming from six different scorers. Khafren Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) netted the first three goals of his collegiate career and added an assist, while Joey Cairy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) also recorded a multi-goal game, tallying two scores and one helper.

Additional goal scorers for Brandywine were Brandon Crochunis (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), Ronaldo Calle (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), Mohamed Camara (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) and Brandon Rochester (Chester, Pa./The Christian Academy). Calle also dished out two assists, while Crochunis assisted on Smith's final goal of the contest.

"This is a great start for us in conference play. We scored four minutes into the game and never looked back. When we finish out chances, we are a tough team to beat," said Head Coach Jesse Zafiratos.

Calle and Cairy accounted for Brandywine's first two scores with both coming during the opening 12 minutes. The Lions poured it on, scoring three times in less than four minutes, with two goals from Smith and one from Crochunis. Rochester scored just before halftime to give Brandywine a 6-0 lead at the break.

Cairy added his second goal at the 51:10 mark, while Smith completed his hat trick during the 60th minute. Camara capped the scoring with 27:20 remaining in regulation.

Brandywine goalkeepers Brandon Welden (Essington, Pa./Interboro) and Jared Sebzda (Warminster, Pa./William Tennett) split time in net. Both made one save in 45 minutes of action to combine on the shutout.

Brandywine travels to western Pennsylvania for two games this weekend, beginning Saturday with a 4:00 pm match at Penn State Beaver.
