Lions End Season On High Note With 3-2 Victory

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Fourth-seeded Penn State Brandywine wrapped up the 2019 season following a 3-2 victory over Southern Maine CC Sunday afternoon at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Tournament.

Nathan Bowman (York, Pa./York Suburban) scored a pair of go-ahead goals, including the eventual game-winner on a penalty kick in the second half, while Ben Sarafinas (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) produced the Lions' first goal 19 minutes into the first period.

Just over five minutes into the game, SMCC took a 1-0 lead, but Brandywine answered with Sarafinas' fourth tally of the fall. Tyler Skaer (Brookhaven, Pa./The Christian Academy) headed the ball into the box and Dom Scrivano (Essington, Pa./Interboro) tapped the ball to Sarafinas for the game-tying score.

Bowman's first goal came early in the second half, giving Brandywine a 2-1 edge, but the lead was short-lived as the Seawolves knotted the match seven minutes later.

Bowman netted the game-winner at the 69:41 mark. After a teammate was taken down in the box, he drove a penalty kick into the upper left corner of the net.

Brandywine outshot SMCC 13-9 and received four stops from goalkeeper Zachary Ritz (Woodlyn, Pa./Ridley).

The Lions completed the 2019 season with a record of 17-6-1 and won the Penn State University Athletic Conference championship for the fourth-straight season and sixth time in the last seven years.
