Men Victorious, Women Fall Against Lancaster Bible In Spring Tennis Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's tennis team claimed a 7-2 victory over Lancaster Bible College, while the Lions' women's tennis squad was dealt a 9-0 defeat by the Chargers in the spring opener for both teams on Monday afternoon.

The Brandywine men swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Matt Canavati (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) and Phuc Nguyen Ho (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) claimed No. 1 doubles by an 8-4 count, while Wenceslao Lara (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) and Victor Ficarra (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) won by a score of 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Stevie DiSipio (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and James Cellucci (Rosemont, Pa./Radnor) earned an 8-3 triumph at No. 3.

In singles action, Ho, Lara and DiSipio all claimed their second victories of the day, while T.J. Foldes (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) won his fifth-flight singles match by scores of 6-3, 7-6. Ho rolled at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-0) as did Lara at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2) and DiSipio gained Brandywine's fourth singles win at No. 6 (6-2, 6-3).

On the women's side, Brandywine suffered losses in all three doubles matches, including Kate Martin (Runnemede, N.J./Triton Regional) and Vidya Nayak's (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) narrow, 8-6 defeat during the No. 2 doubles bout.

Katrina Persaud (West Chester, Pa./Intl. Berkcley School) won nine points at No. 6 singles (6-3, 7-6), while Nayak picked up eight points during her fourth-flight singles match, but fell in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. Katie Corey (Lansdowne, Pa./Agora Cyber Charter) totaled five points in a 6-4, 6-1 setback in second-flight singles.

Both teams will be back at home on Wednesday as the women host Cairn and the men battle Williamson. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
