Brandywine Edges Abington 5-4 To Open Spring Season

ABINGTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's tennis team won its spring opener, topping Penn State Abington 5-4 on the road Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine earned victories in two-of-three doubles matches to take a 2-1 edge into the singles round. Victor Ficarra (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) and Wenceslao Lara (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) teamed to win their No. 2 doubles match 8-2, while Stevie DiSipio (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and Ian Lillard (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) edged their opponents 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

Needing only a split of the six singles bouts to claim the match, Brandywine did just that as Ficarra, DiSipio and Lillard all earned their second triumphs of the afternoon. Ficarra was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 4, while Lillard also won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) during his sixth-flight match. DiSipio landed a three-set victory by counts of 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

Brandywine will play its next six matches at home beginning Monday, April 1 against Immaculata at 3:30 pm.
