Brandywine, Gwynedd Mercy Split Saturday Matches

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's tennis team upped its spring record to 4-2 following a 7-2 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afteroon, but the Lion women were defeated by the Griffins by the same count.

The Brandywine men swept through three doubles contests and then claimed the victory after winning four-of-six singles matchups.

Wenceslao Lara (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) and Victor Ficarra (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) claimed a No. 1 doubles triumph by a count of 8-5. Lara earned his second win of the day by outlasting Max Schneider 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 at No. 1 singles.

Aryaman Bhardwaj (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood) and Aditya Kommoju (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) added an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Bhardwaj eased to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph during his singles match.

Stevie DiSipio (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) was also a double winner, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles after teaming with Ian Lillard (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) to win their No. 3 doubles match 8-3.

James Cellucci (Rosemont, Pa./Radnor) won his sixth-flight singles match in straight sets by scores of 6-4, 6-3.

Rachel Weir (Neptune City, N.J./Red Bank Regional) played a part in both of the victories for the Brandywine women as she swept her No. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-4 and combined with Breana Kerr (Folcroft, Pa.) to win at No. 3 doubles 8-1.

Kate Martin (Runnemede, N.J./Triton Regional) won the first set at No. 4 singles 7-5, but dropped her match in three sets, while Kerr won 10 points, but fell by identical 7-5, 7-5 scores at No. 5 singles.

The Brandywine women host Neumann on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm, while the men battle Williamson Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
