Tanuj Gaikwad Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine sophomore men's tennis student-athlete Tanuj Gaikwad (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) was selected as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar on Wednesday.

Sponsored by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Magazine, the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar awards honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, the magazine has selected the top minority student-athletes who have completed at least two semesters at their institution and hold a grade-point average of 3.20 or higher every year since 1992.

Gaikwad is the fourth Brandywine student-athlete to receive the honor and second men's tennis player. Victor Ficarra earned the award following the 2020-21 academic year.

Gaikwad holds a 3.68 grade-point average as a computer engineering and data science major. He will also receive Penn State University Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Academic Team laurels this spring.

On the court, Gaikwad went 9-1 as Brandywine's No. 1 singles player and won five matches at No. 1 doubles in 2022. He owns a 12-1 career singles record and 8-5 mark during doubles competition following an abbreviated spring season in 2021.

Gaikwad was one-of-23 tennis student-athletes to be named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar. Just five of those honored do not play NCAA Division I tennis.
