Brandywine Claims Two Medals, Five Top-Five Showings At USCAA National Invitational

DELHI, N.Y. -- Two members of the Penn State Brandywine men's track and field team posted top-three finishes to earn national medals, while the Lions posted five top-five showings for the second consecutive year at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships on Saturday on the campus of SUNY Delhi.

Earning medals for Brandywine were freshmen Taufiq Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./World Communications Charter) and David White (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East).

Brown turned in a time of 11.76 seconds during the 100-meter preliminary round, qualifying for the finals with the second-fastest mark. During the final round, Brown improved his time to 11.55 seconds to claim bronze at 100 meters.

In the javelin competition, White set a personal best with a top throw of 37.48 meters, over three meters longer than his previous top mark. White's throw was also good for bronze medal honors.

In addition to his third-place performance at 100 meters, Brown also posted a top-five finish at 200 meters in a field of 14 sprinters. Brown crossed the line in a time of 24.45 seconds.

Freshman Brendan Cleary (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) posted the fifth top-five showing of the day for the Lions at 10,000 meters. He completed the race in 40:39.16, the fourth-fastest mark at the championship.

Overall, Brandywine claimed eighth place during just its second season as a varsity program, totaling 21 points. SUNY Delhi won its second-straight national invitational title by compiling 245 points.

Brandywine will visit State College next weekend for the Jim Thorpe Invitational on the campus of Penn State.
