Track & Field Competes At Penn State's Jim Thorpe Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine track & field team had the opportunity to face NCAA Division I competition at Penn State University's Jim Thorpe Open on a beautiful Friday afternoon in State College.

Competing for Brandywine were freshmen Taufiq Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./World Communications Charter), Michael DiOrio (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and David White (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East).

Brown, a bronze medalist at 100 meters during the USCAA Championships last week, recorded identical fourth-place finishes in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints. At 100 meters, Brown bested his own school record by 0.11 seconds, crossing the finish line in 11.34 seconds. Brown also set a new program benchmark at 200 meters, sprinting to a time of 23.34 seconds, topping the previous record by 0.06 seconds.

White, who also earned a bronze medal at the USCAA Championships, set a personal-best mark for the second consecutive week in the javelin. His longest throw of the day sailed 38.24 meters, good for sixth place.

DiOrio was the lone competitor in the triple jump, where he leapt 4.96 meters for his top mark in six attempts.

Brandywine rounds out its season at the two-day Mideast Regional Invitational on the campus of Widener University, beginning on Wednesday, May 16.
