Brandywine Opens Indoor Season At Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Penn State Brandywine got its 2018-19 indoor track & field season started Saturday morning at the Princeton New Year's Invitational. There was no team scoring for the meet.

Brandywine's team of Brian Abel (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury), Ryan Cassidy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), Brendan Cleary (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garney Valley) and John Li (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) claimed first in the 4x800 relay, posting a time of 9:33.28.

Abel paced the same four Lions in the mile run, grabbing a 3rd-place showing with a time of 5:04.51. Li was fifth (5:18.07), while Cassidy (5:29) ran to sixth and Cleary (5:23.87) claimed seventh.

Taufiq Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./World Communications Charter) matched his own school record by running the 60-meter sprint in 7.29 seconds. He finished fourth in his preliminary heat and 18th in the 34-man field overall, while Myles Weston (New Castle, Del./Delaware Military Academy) ran to a time of 7.62 seconds, placing 31st. Brown and Weston both also competed in the 200-meter race as Brown recorded a time of 24.70 seconds and Weston ran the race in 25.03 seconds.

Andre Fields (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) was the first of three Lions to cross the finish line at 400 meters. His time of 55.32 seconds was ninth best in the 18-man field, while Omar Oliver (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) posted a time of 1:03.93 and Chin Farmer (Byron, Ga./Peach County) finished nine seconds after Oliver.

Catharine Mooney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) was the 12th competitor to finish the women's 800-meter run, doing so in 2:34.71. David Irby (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) topped Brandywine in the men's 800-meter race (2:17.03), while Jose Campos (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) ran to a time of 2:43.19.

Irby, Fields, Farmer and Daniel Zimmerman (Cheyney, Pa./Rustin) teamed to place sixth in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet completed the run in a time of 4:02.40.

Anmol Singh (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) competed in the shot put, tossing a long throw of 7.73 meters to claim 15th place.

Following a lengthy break for the holidays, Brandywine returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Ursinus' Collegeville Classic.
