Brandywine Men Claim DelVal Title; Abel Defends Individual Title

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -- For the first time in the 10-year history of the program, the Penn State Brandywine men's cross country team was crowned meet champion, winning the Delaware Valley University Invitational on Saturday morning. Sophomore Brian Abel (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) was the individual medalist for the second-consecutive year, while Catharine Mooney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) led a pair of Brandywine women, finishing in third place.

Half of the top-10 runners during the men's 8K race were from Brandywine as the Lions accumulated 22 points, besting second-place Delaware Valley by 15 points.

Abel finished the 6K race in 21:15, 65 seconds in front of teammate Alex Rosenberry (Etters, Pa./West Shore Christian Academy), who was the runner-up in his collegiate debut. Rosenberry crossed the finish line in 22:20, while classmate Stephen Heck (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) placed fourth with a time of 22:57.

Ryan Cassidy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), Alex Consadene (Andover, Conn./RHAM) and Tyler Cameron (Pocopson, Pa./Unionville) finished consecutively in eighth and tied for ninth, respectively. Cassidy registered a time of 24:15, while Consadene and Cameron posted identical 24:44 marks. Brendan Cleary's (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) time of 28:33 was good for 14th overall.

Mooney placed third during the women's 6K race one year after claiming runner-up honors at the same meet. She produced a time of 28:35, while Angel Asomugha (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) took 14th place in 41:48.

Brandywine competes at Lebanon Valley's Dutchmen Invitational next Saturday beginning at 10:15 am.
