Mooney Breaks 5K Record; Brandywine Men Sixth In Dutchmen Invitational

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- Sophomore Catharine Mooney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) smashed the Penn State Brandywine 5K record during the women's race and the Lions' men's team took sixth among 14 varsity teams to highlight the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning.

Mooney bested Anya Tyler's three-year old mark by 38 seconds to claim 61st in the women's race, which featured 158 competitors. She topped her previous personal-best 5K time set at last year's Dutchmen Invitational by 1:20, crossing the finish line in 21:38.

Mooney's time was also fastest among competitors from Penn State University Athletic Conference squads by over one minute.

Angel Asomugha (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) also competed for the Brandywine women, running a time of 29:35.

The Brandywine men compiled a team score of 246 to claim sixth place among the 14 teams, comprised of 11 NCAA Division III squads and three PSUAC teams. Messiah earned the men's team title with 43 total points.

All six Lions finished in the top 70 individually in the 161-man, 8K race.

The top mark for the Lions was turned in by Brian Abel (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury), who finished in 32nd position with a time of 28:18. That mark is the third-fastest time in program history.

Alex Rosenberry (Etters, Pa./West Shore Christian) also recorded a top-five time in team history as he crossed the line in a time of 28:44, good for 39th overall.

Stephen Heck (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) was 55th after posting a time of 30:19, while Tyler Cameron (Pocopson, Pa./Unionville) ran to 59th with a time of 31:12.

Ryan Cassidy (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) was just behind Cameron in 61st (31:39), while Alex Consadene (Andover, Conn./RHAM) posted a time of 32:18, finishing 66th.

Brandywine is idle until Sept. 20 when the Lions compete in the Goldey Beacom Invitational beginning at 9:00 am.
