CLERMONT, Fla. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team was defeated by a pair of NCAA Division III teams during its season-opening contests at the PFX Spring Games on Saturday afternoon. York (Pa.) topped Brandywine 9-0 during the opener, while St. Mary's (Minn.) edged the Lions 10-3 later in the afternoon.
The Spartans scored three runs in the first inning and added four more in the third before tallying a pair of scores in the fourth inning to run away with the opener.
Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) collected two of Brandywine's three hits, while Ashlee Stritzinger (Wilmington, Del./Concord) also tallied a base hit.
The Lions' top opportunity to score came in the third inning when Brittany Sroga (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection College Prep) walked with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, and Segich followed with an infield single. Two batters later, Stritzinger roped a single to right field, but Sroga was thrown out at home plate for the final out of the inning.
St. Mary's led 4-0 in the second inning of game two before Brandywine plated its first two runs of the year in the bottom of the frame. Alexa Anderson (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) and Maura Moser (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) registered back-to-back singles with one out to get the rally started. Alexa Cervella (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) drove in Anderson with an infield single, while Moser came around to score via a throwing error by Cardinal pitcher Ashley Betzold.
Brandywine's third run came during the fifth inning when Julia Allman's (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) groundout allowed Cervella, who had singled to begin the frame, to cross home, making the score 5-3; however, St. Mary's answered with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to put the game away.
Cervella tallied two of Brandywine's seven hits, while Segich added her third hit of the day and stole a base. Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) took the loss after allowing five runs in three innings. Moser pitched the final four innings, surrendering five runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out two.
Brandywine faces Juniata (8:00 am) and Pitt-Greensburg (1:00 pm) on Sunday.
