Pitching Leads Brandywine To First Two Victories

CLERMONT, Fla. – Grace DeRosa (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) fired her third-career complete game shutout in game one, while Maura Moser (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) earned her first college win in a complete-game effort during game two as the Penn State Brandywine softball team picked up its first two victories of the season on Tuesday. The Lions blanked Roanoke (Va.), 3-0, before besting Mount Ida (Mass.), 4-2.

DeRosa limited Roanoke to six hits and did not issue a walk, while striking out a pair in the opener. Only one Maroon baserunner advanced past second base against DeRosa, who earned her first win of the season.

Brandywine quickly took a 2-0 lead during the bottom of the first inning when Julia Allman (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) scored on a Maroon error and Moser followed with an RBI base hit, scoring Alexa Anderson (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford). The Lions added an insurance run in the seventh as Allman set down a suicide squeeze that plated Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City).

Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) tallied two of Brandywine's four hits and stole a base, the sixth bag she has swiped in six games this season.

During the second game of the day, Moser shut down Mount Ida to earn her first collegiate win. Moser surrendered just two runs (one earned) on four hits, all singles, in seven innings of work, while striking out three.

Brandywine faced a 2-0 deficit, but rallied to tie the game in the third inning. Maddie Malfara (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) got the Lions on the board when she scored on an error and Moser added a sacrifice fly, plating Segich with the tying run.

Allman put Brandywine in front when her fifth-inning single drove in two runs. Moser allowed a leadoff base hit to start the bottom of the frame, but retired the final nine batters she faced to post the Lions' second win of the day.

Seven different Lions recorded one hit, while Segich and Malfara both scored two runs.

Brandywine (2-4) closes out play in Florida on Wednesday against Catholic (2:00 pm) and Saint Vincent (4:30 pm).
