Stephanie Harvey Named USCAA Student-Athlete Of The Year
AKRON, Ohio – The United States Collegiate Athletic Association selected Penn State Brandywine sophomore Stephanie Harvey (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) as its Softball Student Athlete of the Year on Sunday night during the association's annual awards banquet prior to the start of Monday's World Series.
Harvey becomes the second student-athlete from Penn State Brandywine lauded with the honor, joining Miranda Biondi, who landed the award in volleyball as a senior in 2015.
The USCAA Student-Athlete of the Year Award, awarded annually to one student-athlete from each of the 15 sports the national governing body sponsors, emphasizes academics and community involvement in addition to athletic prowess. The honoree is selected by a committee comprised of USCAA national office members, board members and member athletic directors.
Harvey serves as a fundraising captain for Brandywine's THON chapter and helped the campus raise over $31,000 toward aiding families and children affected by pediatric cancer. As part of her efforts, Harvey raised $6,000 from a fundraiser she began in her hometown of Berlin, N.J. In February, she traveled to the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park to dance in THON, Penn State's 46-hour dance marathon.
Also the Penn State Brandywine Woman of the Year, Harvey works in the Brandywine admissions office as a Lion Ambassador and was named Orientation Leader of the Year for her work during new student orientation last summer.
Recently, Harvey became the fourth Brandywine student-athlete to be selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team and is one of 51 nominees from non-NCAA schools nationwide in the running for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors.
Additionally, Harvey was honored on Sunday night, along with three of her teammates, on the USCAA National Academic Team, bestowed upon student-athletes who hold a minimum grade point average of 3.50. A communication sciences and disorders major, Harvey owns a 3.82 GPA. She also received academic awards from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and from the Penn State University Athletic Conference during the 2016-17 academic year.
In 71 career games at Brandywine, Harvey has collected 56 hits, 50 runs scored and 47 RBI. A career .333 hitter, Harvey received honorable mention all-American honors from the USCAA during her freshman season after claiming First Team All-PSUAC laurels.
Harvey helped Brandywine win its third-straight PSUAC championship earlier in May. The Lions, seeded fifth, face SUNY Canton in the first round of the USCAA World Series on Monday in Akron, Ohio.
