Pomeroys Top Lions In National Quarterfinals

AKRON, Ohio – Two-time defending USCAA champion St. Mary of the Woods topped Penn State Brandywine 6-0 in a winner's bracket battle at the Softball Small College World Series on Tuesday afternoon at Firestone Stadium.

Brandywine (22-14) remains alive in the double-elimination USCAA World Series, needing to beat Judson College (Alabama) Tuesday night at 8:00 pm in an elimination game. A victory for Brandywine would assure the Lions of a second-straight top-four showing at the USCAA World Series.

Stephanie Richardson blanked the Lions over 7.0 innings, upping her record to 11-1 this spring. She struck out six and permitted four hits. Maura Moser (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) suffered the loss for the Lions after yielding six runs (four earned) and striking out one in 5.0 innings. Grace DeRosa (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham), who twirled a no-hitter Monday in a 10-0 win over SUNY Canton, pitched a perfect sixth, fanning two, in relief.

Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett), Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) and Megan Crisafulli (Newtown Square, Pa./Unionville) all recorded hits for Brandywine.

Crisafulli led off the fifth inning with a single, but was stranded at second base and the Lions left two more in scoring position in the seventh inning.

Baylee Waters recorded three hits and drove in two runs for the Pomeroys, who plated two runs in the first and fifth innings, while adding one score in the second and third frames. Emma Riffe, who was named national player of the year on Monday, was held hitless in three plate appearances against Moser, ending her 20-game hitting streak that dated back to March 18.
