Brandywine Rolls In Opener; Splits First Day In Clermont

CLERMONT, Fla. – Penn State Brandywine's softball season opener was delayed three days by weather and travel delays, but the Lions got the 2018 campaign started Tuesday afternoon with a 27-6, five-inning victory over Mitchell College at the PFX Spring Games during their first of two games on the day. Brandywine dropped the nightcap to Dominican (Ill.) 10-0 in five innings.

Brandywine used 27 hits, at least two from all nine players in the starting lineup, to cruise to victory in game one.

Alexa Anderson (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) went 5-for-6 at the plate with two triples and one double as she fell a home run shy of the cycle. Four Lions produced three hits – Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Haley Grossi (Monmouth, N.J./South Brunswick) and Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett). Segich and Cherubini both stole a pair of bases, while Grossi needed a home run to hit for the cycle.

DeStefano clubbed a home run during the Lions' eight run second inning and went 3-for-3 at the plate overall, collecting a double and a single in addition to her long ball. DeStefano also did the pitching for Brandywine, fanning six batters in five innings of work to record the win.

Brandywine scored in every inning, including crooked numbers in the second, fourth and fifth frames. The Lions posted a pair of eight-run stanzas before adding nine scores during the game's final inning.

In game two, Brandywine was limited to four hits, all singles, against Dominican pitchers Cat Kostermann and Michele Behrens. Segich, Cherubini, Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Ashley Dotey (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) accounted for Brandywine's knocks.

DeStefano fired her second complete game of the day, taking the loss after yielding 10 runs (nine earned), while striking out two in five innings in the circle.
