ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine sent its softball senior class out in style during their final regular season home games on Friday afternoon as the Lions rolled past Penn State Scranton by scores of 16-0 and 21-1.
Brandywine scored in every inning of both games. The Lions led the opener 6-0 through three innings before blowing the game open with a 10 spot in the fourth. All nine players in the lineup recorded at least one hit.
Rachel Cherubini (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottstown) went 3-for-4, while Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett), Julie Foeldes (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) and Maddie Malfara (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) all recorded two hits. Segich homered and scored three times, while Cherubini had two extra base hits and DeStefano drove in three runs.
DeStefano had no trouble stopping the Scranton offense, posting a one-hit shutout. She struck out eight over four innings of work, while allowing just two base runners overall. In game two, DeStefano was the winning pitcher for the 14th time this season, setting a new single-season Brandywine record for victories. She added two more strike outs, while limiting the visitors to one run on four hits.
Malfara's RBI double in the third inning preceded Segich's two-run home run, making the score 5-0 in Brandywine's favor. Foeldes added a two-run double, while DeStefano tripled in Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) and Malfara added a run-scoring single in the fourth. Cherubini, Alexa Anderson (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) and Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) recorded consecutive run-scoring hits to end the game after just four innings by run rule.
Brandywine continued to pour it on offensively in game two, scoring 11 runs on 10 first-inning hits before adding 10 more scores in the second.
Anderson led the way offensively, recording a pair of two-run home runs, one over the fence and one inside the park, during the first inning and then tallied a two-run single in the second.
Segich and DeStefano also sprinted around the bases for inside-the-park home runs. DeStefano's was a grand slam in the second inning as she went 2-for-3 and scored twice in game two, while Segich tallied a two-run homer in the first, walked in her three additional plate appearances and crossed home three times.
Cherubini extended her school record hitting streak to 18 games with a 4-for-4 performance in game two. She drove in three runs and scored three times.
Steffen and Grossi both added two hits, while Foeldes collected two RBI.
Brandywine (19-6-1, 10-2 PSUAC) and Scranton will complete the four-game series Sunday at Scranton (12:00 pm).
