Brandywine Rolls To Sweep In Regular Season Finale

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine softball team cruised past Penn State Scranton by scores of 14-1 and 19-0 on Sunday afternoon as the Lions closed out regular season play.

Brandywine posted 16 hits in game one led by Alexa Anderson (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford), Katy Steffen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City), who all tallied three hits.

Anderson, who homered in both games and four times overall in the series, also scored four runs and drove in two, while Velez produced five RBI and crossed home three times.

Katie DeStefano (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett), who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI, earned her 15th and 16th victories of the season in the circle. In game one, DeStefano limited Scranton to one run on one hit, while striking out six in 5.0 innings. She added two more strikeouts and blanked Scranton for her second shutout in three days in game two.

Anderson added four more hits and drove in four during the nightcap, while Julie Foeldes (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) added three hits, three runs and two RBI. Rachel Cherubini (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottstown), who had her team record 18-game hitting streak snapped in game one, went 3-for-4 and scored twice.

DeStefano recorded two more hits in game two, as did Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), who also knocked in four runs and hit her fourth home run of the season. Segich also stole four bases on the day.

Brandywine (21-8-1, 12-4 PSUAC) will be the No. 2 seed in the PSUAC Tournament and host No. 3 Penn State Hazleton in an single-elimination game on Friday at 4:00 pm at Maple Zone.
