Brandywine Falls In Florida Finale

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team closed out its Spring Break trip to Florida with a pair of losses on Wednesday morning after being downed by RPI 8-1 and dropping a 9-0 decision to Carthage in five innings.

Game One: RPI 8, Penn State Brandywine 1

RPI built a 4-0 lead through three innings before Brandywine struck for its lone run in the fourth inning. Alexandra Szpindor (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) singled with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home from second on Alyssa Sullivan's (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) base hit to left field.

Brandywine looked to add to its run total in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but a fly out ended the Lions' threat.

Szpindor went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Sullivan, Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) and Arden Rabiger (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) also tallied hits for the Lions.

Cara Fabiano (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) went the first four innings in the circle, allowing five runs and striking out two, while Rebecca Proctor (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) fanned one during the final two frames.

Game Two: Carthage 9, Penn State Brandywine 0

Brandywine's offense was muted by a pair of Carthage pitchers in game two as the Lions mustered just two hits. Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) recorded a base hit in the first inning and Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) posted a bunt single in the third.

Carthage plated four runs during the first three innings against Szpindor and tacked on a single run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to win the game by run rule.

Brandywine returns to action on March 16 at Swarthmore beginning at noon.
