Long Balls Help Brandywine Knock Off Schuylkill

DUBOIS, Pa. – Three of Penn State Brandywine's 13 hits cleared the fence as the third-seeded Lions won their third-straight elimination game and knocked fourth-seeded Penn State Schuylkill from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association World Series following a 12-4, six-inning victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing 2-0 for the third consecutive game, Brandywine struck for eight runs, all with two outs, during the bottom of the second inning. Taylor D'Attilio (Hammonton, N.J./Cedar Creek) got the scoring started with a two-run single. Following a base hit from Gianna Terpolilli (Hammonton, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy), Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) delivered a single to score D'Attilio. Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) added a two-run single before Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) delivered a the big blow with a long three-run home run over the left field fence.

Schuylkill got two runs back in the third, but could not get any closer. The Lions ended the game by run rule after six innings with a pair of two-run bombs in the sixth. Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) hit the first home run, extending her single-season school record to 11, while Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) ended the game with a long home run to dead center field, her fourth of the year.

Cassario, Landis, Rees and Terpolilli all collected a pair of hits to aid the offense, while Ferry, Rees and Terpolilli each scored twice.

Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) tossed four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, her second of the tournament. She set down nine of the 11 batters she faced, yielding just a pair of singles.

Brandywine (35-12) faced Mississippi University for Women in a rematch of a first-round game at 4:00 PM.
