Brandywine Finishes Fourth At USCAA World Series

DUBOIS, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine's 2022 softball season came to a close following a 7-6 defeat against the Mississippi University for Women at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association World Series Wednesday evening.

Brandywine, after dropping its opening game of the World Series, rallied to win three-straight games in a span of 24 hours to finish fourth, matching the 2016, 2017 and 2019 teams for its best showing at the USCAA Tournament.

The Lions closed the year with a school-record, and likely a Penn State University Athletic Conference record, 35 victories, eight greater than the previous mark of 27 set in 2018. Brandywine is only the second team from the PSUAC to win at least 30 games in the last 15 years.

Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) recorded three hits to up her season total to 52, making her one-of-12 players in Brandywine history with a 50-hit season, joining teammates Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) and Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), who also accomplished the feat this spring.

Landis' 56th hit of the season was a run-scoring single during a two-run first inning, giving her 51 RBI for the year, the highest total in the USCAA.

Ferry stroked her second home run of the day and 12th of the year, upping her USCAA-leading and team-record total with a two-run shot in the third inning. She reached base safely three times after walking twice and crossed home twice, giving her 54 runs scored for the season to match a Brandywine record.

Jess James (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) singled and stole her team-best 26th base, while Lianna DeDios (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) added a run-scoring base hit and Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) tallied an RBI groundout.

Sarah Moore (New Holland, Pa./Pequea Valley) pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on four hits, and finished the year with a 7-2 record. Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) worked the first four innings in the circle, striking out one, while allowing five runs.
