York Halts Brandywine's Winning Streak

YORK, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine could not overcome an 10-point deficit entering the fourth quarter as the Lions' women's basketball team saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night at Penn State York by a score of 59-56.

After Alyssa Abbonizio's (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) three-pointer brought the score to 36-33 midway through the third quarter, York ended the period with 12 of the final 17 points to extend its lead to 48-38.

Brandywine held York without a point during over the first 6:07 of the final quarter, climbing back into the game by netting seven-straight points. Brandi James (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) got the comeback started by converting a three-point play, while Chrissy Gledhill (Secane, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Crystal Miller (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) both added jumpers, with Miller's bringing the deficit to just three with under four minutes to play.

After a York free throw ended its scoring drought, Brandywine pulled within two points twice in a two-minute span, both time following baskets by Kendra Stanford (Philadelphia, Pa./William Bodine).

York connected on six free throws in span of 22 seconds as its lead reached six points with under one minute to go, but Miller's bucket with 10 seconds to play followed by jumper from Madison D'Ambrosio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) brought the score to 58-56 with three ticks remaining on the clock.

Sky Warner made 1-of-2 free throws for York, keeping the game within one possession for the Lions, but Brandywine's final three-point heave was off the mark.

Brandywine's 12-game winning streak, one game short of matching the school record set 11 years ago, ended after the Lions shot 36 percent from the field and made only 3-of-18 attempts from beyond the three-point arc. The Lions also sank just 13-of-22 free throw tries.

Stanford netted a team-best 14 points, along with five rebounds and three steals, while James paired 13 rebounds with eight points. Gledhill tallied eight points and three assists.

Brandywine (18-6, 12-1 PSUAC) will close out the regular season Friday during Senior Night against Penn State Lehigh Valley. The winner of Friday night's game will be the No. 1 seed and host for the PSUAC Tournament.
